See ya!

Well, we're packing up and leaving the upstate in a couple hours and heading northbound for our annual ski trip with the Johnson's and the Murphy's!! I won't be doing any skiing this time around with a bun in the oven, but I'm looking forward to spending some quality time with good friends and I'm certainly looking forward to sitting in our nice cozy cabin all weekend and watching the 10-15 inches of snow fall!!

I'm sure I'll take tons and tons of pictures and can't wait to post about our trip next week when we return. Austin is super excited to be spending an entire weekend with his BFF Tyler and I can't wait to see how the two tots interact for an entire weekend. The boys were only 3 months and 9 months this time last year so this should be interesting!!

Just a quick reminder before we head out...DON'T FORGET to enter the Fun Frames Giveaway ASAP! I'll be picking a winner as soon as we get back from the snowy mountains...assuming we can make it back down the mountain in over a foot of snow!!

Fun Frames Giveaway!!

So, just when I realized that I was in a blogging rut and thought there was no end in sight, I was pleasantly surprised when I was contacted by a rep from CSN stores asking if I would like to host a fun giveaway right here at Adventures With Austin for all you great readers and followers!! Get ready to check your mailbox for a fun surprise!!

I was quick to oblige and even more excited when I learned that I would get to pick out the prize myself! I spent most of last night perusing their site for the perfect item to giveaway when I finally stumbled upon just that...

These Trend Lab Two Picture Frame Sets are not only the perfect gift, but I actually have a set hanging in Austin's nursery this very minute and can personally vouch for them myself! Also, they come in a variety of patterns and colors to suit any nursery or children's room decor and many of the prints and patterns are cute enough to hang just about anywhere in your home (even for those of you without children).

Here are just a few of my favorites:

So, how do you go about winning a set of these fun frames you ask?

It's easy! Just leave me a comment using the keyword "Fun Frames" in your post and you'll be entered! I'll pick a random commenter sometime at the beginning of next week and announce the winner right here! The winner will just need to send me their color/pattern choice and shipping info and CSNBaby will send your fun frames on their way!!

Oh, and be sure to visit www.csnbaby.com and do a search for Trend Lab Frame Set to see all the great options you can choose from!

And just for your viewing pleasure, here's a shot of our very own set of Trend Lab frames that are currently hanging in Austin's nursery. Pretty cute, huh?!

The Hulk!

In honor of Austin's big growth spurt, the fact that he has almost gone directly from size 12-18 months clothing to a size 2T, (bypassing 18-24 months almost completely) and the fact that he has the ability to go from sweet, cuddly little toddler to an angry little monster in 5 seconds flat....I splurged a little at baby Gap the other day and bought him this super cute Hulk tee (in a size 2T no less).

We worked on our Hulk "growl" for several minutes last night and this is Austin showing off his best impression for the camera. I think we'll hold off on the whole clothes ripping and smashing bits for a little while...

A few things...

First of all, I just want to say thank you to all of you who commented on my last post with name suggestions. I wish I could say that they were a huge help and reveal the name of our new addition right this very moment, but sadly I can not. Why? Because after taking your suggestions to my dear husband, along with a few of my own I thought about through the day, he shot down every - last - one. So, back to the drawing board it seems. Looks like baby boy #2 will have to remain just that for a little while longer. Sigh...

Secondly, I want to inform everyone that a truly GREAT opportunity is coming to a blog near you in the very near future. :) I've got to work out a few more of the exciting details, but check back tonight or tomorrow for something really fun!

Finally, I leave you with a picture of my adorable boy child "helping" mommy do her most favorite chore of all...laundry! Please note the sarcasm there as I would just about rather scrub the hardwoods on my hands and knees all afternoon than complete 1 single load of laundry. I can't wait until Austin's actually old enough to really help with the laundry.

The Name Game

So, Ryan and I have pretty much agreed that we are not too concerned about keeping the new baby's name a secret like we did with Austin. While it was fun to make the big reveal at the end, the months of trying not to let it slip and the amount of people who got mad at us for not telling just wasn't worth it. However, in order to tell you the name of our newest addition....we have to FIND ONE!

We seem to be having such a hard time deciding on a name for this new bundle of joy so I'm taking it to the blog for some help and suggestions!!

Here's our naming criteria:
-We would love for this baby's name to start with an 'A,' but it's not necessary since it narrows the field so much.
-It has to go well with Patrick as a middle name.
-We don't like weird spellings.
-I'd like for it to be something somewhat uncommon, but not too unusual, since we have a pretty common last name.

Ryan doesn't understand that last criteria, first of all because he doesn't think the last name Harris is common and secondly because, unlike me, he didn't grow up going to school with 10 other people in his grade having the exact same first name. I like my name, but lets be honest, Jennifer was the most common girls name for over a decade between the 70's and 80's and I was guaranteed at least one...usually 2 or even 3...other girls with the same name as me in every class while in school. Don't believe me? Check this out- (courtesy of www.socialsecurity.gov)

15 years as #1...isn't that crazy!!

Ok, so it's not a huge deal to share a first name with someone else, there are billions of people and only so many names out there, but I would like just a teensy bit of originality, is that so much to ask?

That being said, the following names are OUT as they are the top 15 boys names of the past decade:

1 Jacob
2 Michael (And I thought my name was bad, Michael has been in the top 2 since 1954!!)
3 Joshua
4 Matthew
5 Christopher
6 Andrew
7 Daniel
8 Ethan
9 Joseph
10 William
11 Anthony
12 Nicholas
13 David
14 Alexander
15 Ryan

So there ya have it...

Maybe it's all these criteria that are making it so difficult for us or maybe it's the fact that Ryan prefers traditional names and I prefer more contemporary ones. Either way, we would love some ideas, feedback or even a referral to a good naming website that we've somehow overlooked. Baby boy Harris #2 needs a name!

FYI - The names Harrison and Neal are out due to (what should be) obvious reasons.

15 Months!

Last Friday, Austin turned 15 months old! His personality is really starting to emerge and he's starting to lose that baby look and turn into one adorable little toddler! He's as active as ever and learning new things daily. Here are some facts about 15 months:

-Lets start off with the stats: Austin is 27 lbs. which puts him in the 80th percentile for weight. This is up from 23.5 lbs. and 65th percentile at 12 months. No, I haven't been overfeeding my child these past 3 months...listen to this...he is 32.75 inches tall and in the 91st percentile for height!! That is NOT a typo....MY baby boy is taller than 91% of other baby boys his age...this is unreal to me as his mother is shorter than 95% of women her age. Austin grew 2 inches in 3 months...unbelievable. At this rate he will outgrow me by the time he's 5. I couldn't be happier though as my height (or lack of) is one of the traits I did NOT especially want to pass on to a little boy...

-Austin's hear circumference puts him in the 92nd percentile...looks like he got his height and big noggin from his daddy! :)

-Due to this growth spurt, Austin is now tall enough to climb on the couch unassisted. On one hand it's great because he now loves to climb on the couch with me, get in my lap, cuddle and watch tv or drink his juice. On the other hand, I can no longer keep him off the couch...or the adjacent end table which used to house all the stuff we didn't want him to touch...like remotes, the telephone, a picture frame and opened canned drinks.

-Austin knows how to work the TV...and the Directv box. He turns the tv on when he wants and he can turn it off just as easily...like in the final seconds of a close basketball game. He also records random shows on the DVR, and has interrupted the recording of several of our favorite shows. Thank goodness for Hulu.com!!

-Austin knows his eyes, nose, mouth, teeth and tongue and can point to/show you them all. If you ask him to show you your eyes...he will drop whatever he's doing, run to your side, dig his finger into your eyeball and shout "iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii" at the top of his lungs. Painful, but hilarious!

-Speaking of painful, Austin has learned to throw things. Sometimes instead of letting go and throwing an object, he keeps it in his hand and just pegs you with it. He hit Ryan in the back of the head with a book last night. I guess that's one way of letting us know he wants to be read to!!

- While he doesn't say a whole lot yet, he does have a few favorite words like bye, eye, nana or na (banana), ball, book, no (no and nose), all done, that, mama, and dada. He says "bye-bye dada" in the mornings when Ryan leaves for work.

-He calls Lucy "ba-da" and we can't figure out why. Maybe he's heard us call her a bad dog so often that it's stuck...

-When asked what the sheep says he will say "ba," when asked what the tiger or lion says he will say "rah," and when asked what the horse says he says "neigh." He seems to be way more interested in making animal noises than saying actual words. Maybe they're easier or maybe they're just way more fun...who knows!! :)

-Austin's favorite "toy" is Lucy. He loves to pet her (while yelling "ba-da") and to grab her chew toys and run around the living room with her chasing behind him. He thinks she is hilarious....Lucy finds him to be a nuisance at best.

-Since he started walking at 11 months, I knew it wouldn't be long, but Austin is now running....and fast! He seriously has two speeds....stop and run. This has caused for quite a few tumbles as his feet sometimes go faster than the rest of him....but the rest is catching on pretty fast.

-A few weeks ago we finally turned Austin's car seat forward facing. We would have kept it rear facing for longer (due to safety reasons) but his legs have gotten so long that they were all crammed up against the seat. He likes to sit forward and I like that I can turn around and see him with ease. However, he now kicks the seat in front of him and is able to pull the sunshade off the window.

-Even though he doesn't say much, Austin understands an enormous amount. He watches and learns and figures things out well on his own or with a little help. He will go get a specific book or toy when asked, he will bring objects to Ryan and I when we ask for them, he will go to his mat when I say he needs a diaper change, to the stairs when I say it's time for night-night and to the bath tub when I say it's bath time. He will also take his clothes off on command (or try to), give hugs and kisses and will (usually) stop doing something when we tell him no.

Austin is such a wonderful, smart, healthy, happy and active child and I am so blessed that he is mine! Yeah, he can throw a tantrum with the best of 'em and has a bit of a temper, but I love him more than I ever could have imagined just the way he is!!

MIA

Uhh, I've been such a bad blogger lately...and I don't know if it's going to get better any time soon! It's not like things haven't been exciting or busy around here, ok, so yeah, they really haven't, but I also just haven't felt like writing. In fact, I just made Ryan leave the room and watch TV in the bedroom in order to force myself to write a post since it's almost been a week now!! Not a good way to start off the new year...

So anyway, for the 23 of you that read this, I'll quickly recap the pretty much boring start of our 2010....and some reasons why I've neglected the blog (mainly due to lack of sleep and/or anything interesting to blog about):

-After New Years, Ryan and I both came down with some sort of stomach bug. Mine hit in the middle of the night and his the following morning. Therefore, I had to take care of a rambunctious 14 month old on NO sleep and a queasy stomach all day while Ryan was in bed all morning going through the unpleasantries I had experienced just a few hours prior. It was NOT a good weekend....and was just the beginning of our constant battle with little sleep. FYI-Austin did NOT get sick, thank the LORD! It must have been something we ate.

-However, 4 of Austin's molars ALL decided to come in that next week causing mommy and baby to have some really rough nights and several LONG days.

-The next Saturday we finally took the Christmas decorations down from outside the house so as to not scream to the entire neighborhood how tired and lazy we were. I took down the decorations inside the house except for the Christmas tree. They are still sitting on our dining room table waiting to go upstairs and back into the attic. We're shooting for this weekend...

-Sunday was Aaron's baby shower and I spent the afternoon in Anderson leaving Ryan in control of the munchkin. Of course, Austin decided to take the longest nap in the history of napping while I was away. His teething pain finally subsided enough to let him catch up on a little of that lost sleep. Just my luck I was gone the entire time!! Oh...what I could have done with those 4 glorious hours....

-The next week was spent recovering from sleep deprivation...or at least attempting to. A late basketball game, a new Wii game, the return of our favorite TV shows and a super late date night didn't help matters too much...

-Speaking of our date night, Friday Ryan and I went to dinner at our favorite Italian restaurant (Giovanni's...yummm!) and then to see Avatar 3-D. We REALLY needed it and had a great time. We arrived home after 1am to find Grandma rocking a screaming baby back to sleep. Oh no, not again....

-Austin slept soundly the rest of the night, but woke up extra early Saturday with horrible congestion, watery eyes and a terribly runny nose. Hey, I knew we couldn't escape the entire cold & flu season without a little something...but good grief...right after a horrible week of teething!? The poor little guy was pitiful all weekend and it broke our hearts. He couldn't breathe out of his nose due to the congestion, which means he couldn't suck on his paci to go to sleep, which made for a few more restless nights.

-We took down the Christmas tree on Saturday. When your toddler is no longer interested in the bows, branches and tons of dangling ornaments...you know it's been there way too long. It had a good run. If 2011 starts off anything like 2010...it just may stay up until Valentine's Day next year!

-This week has been better. Not great, but better. Ryan had to work Sunday which I LOATHE. I got bit by the nesting bug Monday and redecorated our kitchen and removed 3 garbage bags of old shampoos, soaps, deodorants, toothbrushes and other random toiletries from our bathroom and finally got things organized in there. Austin's cold has cleared up nicely and he had a great well-baby visit on Tuesday (blog post to come soon). Looks like we've now made it through Wednesday! So, bring on the weekend!!

Trouble x's 4

(FYI-I started writing this on Friday afternoon and then forgot to finish and publish until tonight. Thank you blogger for saving drafts of what I write...without auto-save I don't think I could keep this blog going!!!)

For the past week now, my sweet boy who sleeps 14 hours a day, has continuously woken up several times a night screaming and has had a terrible time napping. Mommy and daddy have been so spoiled by his wonderful sleeping habits that this week hit us particulary hard and has made for two ornery parents to say the least!

Of course we checked for all the obvious things like a fever, tooth coming through, problems breathing due to stuffy nose...but we couldn't figure out what was going on. Something HAD to be bothering him to interfere with his sleep THIS much.

After putting him down for his nap on Friday morning, he woke up just 30 minutes later and wouldn't even take his beloved pacifier to help him go back to sleep. He was screaming like it hurt him just to suck. I just KNEW we were dealing with our first ear infection and immediately placed a call to the pediatrician's office for a check-up to confirm.

One hour later we were in the waiting room and Austin was in toddler heaven. He is a very curious and independent almost-15-month-old and while we were there, checked out every nook and cranny of that small waiting room. I tried to keep him on the "sick" side, just in case, but that was a pretty much impossible task. There were more people on the "well" side and he had to check out every... single... one. He approached every child he could find...he's fascinated with children...and even more so with what they tend to be holding or are wearing on their feet. He wanted to see every other child's toy....he wanted to steal their lollipops....he wanted to touch them....he wanted to yank on their shoes and play hide and go seek with them....anything to get their attention.

I chased after him and pulled him to the other side about a dozen times. I tried to get him to play with his toys quietly or sit in my lap and read a book. I pulled out his favorite snack to distract him. I held him up to the window and we looked at every passing car and pointed to the trees and bushes outside...

All of a sudden I realized I was exhausted...and I looked at my phone and realized that I had been chasing and distracting my little munchkin in that waiting room for 45 MINUTES!!!

I walked up to the counter with wild man in tow and the girl knew something was wrong immediately. She looked at her computer and saw that it said we had already CHECKED OUT. Ehhhhh...

A nurse finally came and got us and took us to a room. Whew! A small space with no other people for Austin to annoy play with...maybe he would sit quietly on the table now and read a book or watch the TV.

But no...

He ripped every piece of paper covering that padded table to absolute shreds. And I let him. Because that's what a mommy does when she's been waiting in the doctor's office for an hour with a toddler...

10 minutes later a nurse peeked in and said she'd be right back but things had just gotten busy. I told her I was running out of distractions after waiting so long just to have someone check my baby's ears and so she sent in another nurse with a bucket of toys. Austin was amused and I was agitated...

Finally, a doctor came in because the nurse who our appointment was with was apprarently busier than he was...go figure! He agreed that it was probably an ear infection after hearing the symptoms I described and proceeded to take a look in Austin's ears.

They were fine. Of course. Not that I wanted my baby to have an ear infection, but after all we'd gone through I felt like it shouldn't have all been for nothing...know what I mean? Not to mention, I still had a cranky, tired, non-sleeping baby on my hands.

So the doctor kept looking and a check in the back of Austin's mouth quickly revealed the problem. Not one, but FOUR of his molars are coming in at the exact same time. Poor baby!!!

Considering he only has 6 teeth, I thought molars weren't coming in until much later, but these 4 apparently decided to jump the gun.

So far the best treatment has been Motrin before bed, Tylenol before naps and my new tooth brush I just brought home from the dentist. It's the only thing that will get back there far enough to soothe those sore gums and Austin carries it around all day long.

The past three days have been significantly better and Austin seems to be making up on all that lost sleep by taking 3 hour naps every day. Thus, I have caught up on mine as well!! :)

All is MUCH happier in the Harris household!

Pregnancy Questionnaire

I saw this questionnaire on another blog and thought it would be fun to do and a good means to update everyone now and again on the pregnancy progress. I don't want baby #2 to feel completely left out in the blogging world and I thought this was a good way of inculding him. Before I start, let me just say that I had an appointment today and everything is looking fantastic! Baby H is measuring 2 weeks bigger at the moment (eek!) and his heart rate is around 145 bpm. In other good news my bp has been consistently LOW at every appointment so far so it looks like I might just avoid all that hypertension/bed rest mess this time around. Woo hoo!

Pregnancy Questionnaire #1:
How far along? 23 weeks 5 days
Total weight gain/loss: 3 lbs.
Maternity clothes? Been wearing them since about 14 weeks and remembering how much I LOVE them. I just wish I didn't have to buy more since I accumulated so much when I was pregnant with Austin...however, I was pregnant with him during the hot summer and can't use much this time around.
Stretch marks? I got a few when I was pregnant with Austin and they are starting to become a little more visible, but nothing new yet and I hope it stays that way. Stretch marks are truly the worst thing about pregnancy!
Sleep: I tend to wake up between 3-4am every night for a bathroom break and have trouble getting back to sleep after that. I'm not quite to that super uncomfortable stage yet but I know it's coming! Right now I just surround myself with pillows and it seems to do the trick.
Best moment this week: Seeing the scale at my doctor's appointment today say that I had only gained 1 lb. in the past 5 weeks since my last visit. I was getting a little worried at what I might see after chowing down on all those Christmas goodies the past few weeks!
Movement: Some days he doesn't STOP and then some days I maybe only feel him every 2 hours or so. It's just so inconsistent this early but I sure love feeling those baby kicks!
Cravings: I craved fruit constantly with Austin but I haven't had anything like that so far this time around. I have been indulging in a Sonic cherry Dr. Pepper every now and then, though, and usually stop to get one when I'm out and about. It satisfies my caffeine and sugar cravings all in one.
Gender: Baby boy!
Labor Signs: None yet, thank goodness!
Belly Button in or out? In, but it's looking a little distorted and stretched out.
What I miss: I really missed having a glass of champagne or two on New Year's Eve.
What I am looking forward to: Meeting my sweet baby boy and introducing Austin to his new little brother!
Weekly Wisdom: I was constantly freaked out about what I was eating and drinking when I was pregnant with Austin but I've learned that I went overboard last time and am much more laid back this pregnancy. I eat deli meat as long as its been microwaved or toasted, I'm not scared of cheese and I have 1-2 caffeinated drinks a day. It makes for a much happier me and my doctor has assured me that it's all completely safe!
Milestones: People are finally starting to notice that I'm pregnant when I go out and asking me when I'm due, etc. It makes me feel a lot less self conscience and more comfortable being in public. I really hate that stage where you feel like you're showing but to the rest of the world you pretty much just look like you just left and all-you-can-eat buffet...

1st Playdate of 2010

On New Year's Day we went over to the Bondurant's for dinner and a playdate. Their precious little girl, Sofia, is one week younger than Austin and it blows all our minds how much these two are alike!! Not only are they the same exact size, but they act so similar and get along wonderfully.

Austin and Sofia had a really fun time playing together and Austin even gave her several kisses....something he's never done to anyone else besides me and Ryan. He was truly intrigued by her and a bit smitten, I believe. I think we have a little flirt on our hands! Sofia even returned his kiss at the end of the night as we were telling everyone goodbye. Hmmm....future love birds maybe??

The two little ones played hard until why past their bedtimes, but it was just so difficult to drag them away from one another while they were having so much fun. Not to mention, we were all enjoying our adult conversation while the munchkins entertained each other....a beautiful sight indeed!

The night ended with a tissue paper tear up and it seemed to be the highlight of the evening. Who knew a .5 cent piece of tissue paper could provide so much fun and entertainment!! Austin and Sofia both ripped that paper to shreds and had a ball the entire time.

(FYI - These pictures were taken pre-haircut.)

Merry Christmas, Kitties!

1st Haircut

Well, we did, we finally did it. I cracked under the pressure from my husband and just got tired of people mistaking my baby boy for a little girl...so we did it...we took Austin to get his 1st haircut yesterday evening.

It was an interesting experience mixed with so many emotions and I'd be lying if I said I didn't start to cry a little when I saw that baby fine hair falling to the floor. It was like watching him grow up right before my very eyes. Somehow my little baby transformed into a little boy right there in that chair and it made me proud and sad all at the same time.

Austin had no idea what was going on the entire time and just sat there and enjoyed the dum-dum lollipop in his mouth. I mean he REALLY enjoyed that thing. No, seriously...Elmo could have been dancing and singing right in front of him and he wouldn't have even noticed. What a lifesaver!

So, fifteen minutes later the whole thing was over and we took home a sticky, hairy, slobbery little boy and the remainder of his baby mullet in a tiny plastic baggy.

Merry New Year!

You know you're getting old when you aren't sure you can stay awake long enough on New Year's Eve to even watch the ball drop! It was a struggle, but we remained vertical until 1:15 this morning and were very proud of ourselves for making it that far! Despite the fatigue, we had a very nice evening, however much more uneventful than New Year's Eves of the past.

Our friend Leigh had her birthday party at Smoke on the Water and so we called Grandma over to watch the little man and we went out and enjoyed a very nice child-free dinner and some delicious food. The party was a Scottish theme, and Aaron made an awesome cake for the occasion with their families tartan as the background and an adorable Loch Ness monster on top! She doesn't realize how talented she is!

Aaron and her husband, Jeff, came back to our place after dinner and we played Ryan's new Wii and toasted the New Year with some sparkling grape juice. Yum! We were all pretty exhausted after watching 2010 arrive and baby Willey was giving her poor mama a hard time and kicking her in the ribs all evening...so we called it a night, and 10 minutes later Ryan and I were in bed seconds away from sleep. First, however, I had to go upstairs and give my sweet sleeping boy a New Year's kiss on his little head!

It's so hard to believe that another year has come and gone and even harder to believe that we just wrapped up a decade! What a fun and interesting 10 years it's been...but nothing can beat the past 3, the best years I've had so far, when I became a wife and a mom.

Here's to 10 more fabulous years! Happy New Year everyone!

Ryan trying to imitate a Scotsman...

Aaron's very creative cake. Isn't Nessy adorable!

Happy Birthday Leigh!

Aaron likes belly shots about as much as I do...she's 32 weeks here...not much longer now!
